of Augustinian Recollects and Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese
of Sacramento, California, and whose cause for beatification and
canonization was introduced to the Vatican in Rome in November,
2006.

news concerning activities related to the Cause of Bishop Gallegos,
learn more about his extraordinary life and works, and have the
opportunity to share experiences you may have had with the Bishop
or relate any special favors you may have received through his
intercession. At this point in the process of beatification and
canonization we are praying for miracles on behalf of Bishop Gallegos,
which are God's way of confirming the reputation of holiness and
heroic charity of one of his sons or daughters in the Catholic
Church.
We invite you, then, to pray
with us for the advancement of the Cause of Bishop Gallegos and
that the good work he has begun-especially his concern for youth,
immigrants, the poor, the unborn, and the physically and mentally
challenged-may continue to be remembered and imitated by all of
God's people.
The background is formed by white
shield, suggesting the snow-covered Sierra Mountains, prominent
in the Sacramento Diocese; a triple-branched nettle tree harkens
back to the original coat of arms of the Gallegos family, while
the seven leaves budding from the tree symbolize the seven sacraments;
a carpenterÕs square gives recognition to St. Joseph, patron of
the family, and a golden rose honors Our Lady of Guadalupe; the
two Aztec wings recall San Miguel, patron of the family church in
Watts (Los Angeles), California.

EXHUMATION AND TRANSFER OF THE BODY OF

BISHOP ALPHONSE GALLEGOS, OAR
Former Auxiliary Bishop of Sacramento
1931-1991
On March 27, 2010 after a solemn concelebrated mass at 12 noon presided by Bishop Jaime Soto, the mortal remains of the Servant of God Alphonse Gallegos, will be transferred to a new tomb at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, 711 T St. Sacramento, CA.
Prior to this event, the body of the late Bishop will be exhumed from St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Sacramento where he has been laid to rest for the last 19 years. The purpose of exhumation is not to satisfy the curiosity of knowing whether or not the body is incorrupt but to certify that the mortal remains of a Servant of God, whose cause for canonization is in progress, are authentic.

to be presided by
his Excellency Bishop Jaime Soto
at 12 midday.
The vigil will start at 10:00 in the morning.
The faithful are cordially invited to attend this sacred occasion
and to pray that the day may come when this devoted son
of Our Lady of Guadalupe may be raised to the altars
among the blessed and saints. |

In October 2007, Sara Sevilla of Oxnard eagerly awaited the test results that could explain why suddenly she had lost her sight. But doctors could only describe the situation as a “phenomenon.”

OAR General Visits Tomb Of Bishop Gallegos
Sacramento, CA. The Reverend Father Javier Guerra Ayala, Prior General of the Order of the Augustinian Recollects, recently visited the tomb of the Servant of God Bishop Alphonse Gallegos, OAR at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. He was accompanied by Father Eliseo González, OAR, Vice Postulator of the Cause. The Diocesan Process of the Cause of Canonization of Bishop Gallegos was opened in Sacramento on December 4, 2005 and concluded on November 4, 2006. Approves Validity of Diocesan Process for
Bishop Gallegos
The
Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints
has issued an affirmative decree of validity
of the diocesan process for the cause of beatification
of Bishop Alphonse Gallegos, OAR. The Congregation
has also appointed a Spanish priest, Fr. José
Luis Gutierrez, a member of Opus Dei, as Relator
for the Cause of Bishop Gallegos, and confirmed
the appointment of Fr. Eliseo Gonzalez, OAR,
as his official collaborator. The next step
is to prepare for the Positio Super Virtutibus,
a formal presentation of the virtues of the
Bishop.
Certainly this positive action of the Congregation
is a cause for great rejoicing by St. Augustine
Province as well as for the whole Order.

Year Later
Celebration of the conclusion
of the diocesan phase of the cause of Beatification and Canonization
of Bishop Alphonse Gallegos, OAR
It was a relief to
get away from New York just as the cold weather was setting in,
and to get a mini-reprieve by a visit to sunny California. My thoughts,
however, were on more than just the weather on that Friday, November
3, as the plane lifted off from Newark Liberty Airport and headed
west. The purpose of my trip was to take part, along with my Recollect
brothers, in the formal closing of the diocesan phase of the cause
for the beatification and canonization of Bishop Alphonse Gallegos,
OAR, which was set to take place at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral
in Sacramento on Sunday, November 5, 2006. After a five-and-a-half
hour flight, it was good to see the familiar face of Br. Jorge Valdivia
at the baggage carousel in LAX, waiting to take me up the coast
to Oxnard. We arrived at St. Augustine Priory around mid-afternoon,
and were scheduled to leave for Sacramento the following day. It
was definitely déjà vu. Less than one year earlier
on December 4, 2005, I had made an almost identical trip to attend
the opening
of the Gallegos cause.

A Saint in the Family?
Opening of the Cause for Beatification of
Bishop Alphonse Gallegos, OAR
Yes,
we were pushing it: we had decided to travel the same day as the
big event. I had set my alarm clock for 5:00 AM. We were leaving
for Sacramento at 6:30 AM, which gave me plenty of time to get ready
for the seven-hour trip from Oxnard to California’s state
capital. The sun was just coming up when I walked over to the dining
room, where I was greeted by many of the other friars, students,
and visitors who would be making the journey to attend the opening
of the cause of beatification of Bishop Alphonse Gallegos, OAR.
Everyone was having his wake-up coffee and a bite to eat before
starting out. We had decided to pile ourselves and our overnight
bags into three vans and to get an early start so that we would
be ready to attend the 5:30 PM concelebrated liturgy at Blessed
Sacrament Cathedral, presided by Bishop William Weigand.

on Bishop Alphonse Gallegos
The
closing of the initial phase for the process of beatification and
canonization of Bishop Alphonse Gallegos is scheduled to take place
on November 5, 2006, and will be celebrated with a 1:00 PM Mass, presided
by Bishop William Weigand of Sacramento, California, in Sacred Heart
Cathedral. This date coincides with what would have been the 25th anniversary of the Bishop’s ordination to the episcopacy—November
4, 1981—in the same cathedral.
