Fr. Anthony Palos, OAR,
receives evangelization award

Fr. Charles Huse, prior provincial (l), presents the Ezekiel
Moreno award to Fr. Anthony Palos.

The Cursillo de Cristiandad of New York held its 19th annual banquet De Colores at Marina Del Rey restaurant in the Bronx on May 10, 2007.
Some 800 guests and community members were present for the celebration, including
Fr. Fidel Hernandez, spiritual director, and Br. Mario Alvarez, assistant director
of St. Joseph Center, as well as Bishops David Arias, OAR (retired--Newark), and Gerald Walsh (auxiliary--New York). Fr.
Provincial, Charles Huse, was also on hand to present Fr. Anthony Palos with
the Ezekiel Moreno Evangelization Award for his work over many years in serving
the Hispanic community and the Cursillo Movement. An elegant meal in a most
beautiful setting accompanied by lively music enhanced the spirit of celebration
that always marks this unique occasion. Fr. Provincial’s comments follow:
The glorious history of the Cursillo Movement in the Archdiocese of New
York began with the first Cursillo in the archdiocese, given at Tagaste Monastery
in Suffern, New York, in 1961.
Are there by chance any here this evening who were present for the first
Cursillo?. . .
Only Anthony Palos raised his hand. And so I pointed out that among the many
reasons that distinguish him in the movement is that he goes back to the very
beginning. One year after his ordination in 1960 he made his Cursillo in 1961
and began immediately to work with the movement. He has remained active in Cursillo
in varying degrees and in many places during these past 46 years.
He was a member of the team that initiated the Cursillo in the Archdiocese
of Newark in 1963 and remained there, dedicated entirely to the Cursillo until
1968.
During his years of parochial ministry he participated in Cursillos and
promoted the movement in the Dominican Republic and Mexico and here in the U.S.
in the states of Arizona and California.
I am sure that the reason that most of you know him, and one of the principal
reasons why he has been selected to receive this award was his outstanding service
and dedication during the 7 years 1984-1991 when he served as Director of St.
Joseph Center and Conciliario de Cursillos in New York.
It is my honor and pleasure to present the St. Ezekiel Moreno Award for
Evangelization to a man who is truly of Cursillo and for Cursillo, truly a man
“de colores”: Fr. Anthony Palos.
The community extends its sincerest congratulations to Fr. Palos in receiving
this very special award and wishes him continued success in his ministry.
