Bishop Alphonse Gallegos, O.A.R.
Summary Remarks on Cause
of Bishop Alphonse Gallegos, OAR
By Fr.
Eliseo González, OAR

Fr .Eliseo Gonzalez, Secretary/Notary,
summarizes the work that has been accomplished on the Cause of Bishop
Gallegos.
Before Bishop Garcia proceeds with the
homily, allow me to give an insight of the important ceremony that
is to take place immediately after this mass, the closing ceremony
of the diocesan process of the causes of beatification and canonization
of the Servant of God, Bishop Alphonse Gallegos.
Last December 5, 2005 the diocesan inquiry
was officially opened in this cathedral. Since then 130 witnesses
came to give their testimonies about the life, virtues and fame
of sanctity of Bishop Alphonse Gallegos. Among them were a cardinal,
five bishops, 18 priests, 10 men and women religious and 96 lay
persons. Together with the testimonies of these witnesses are important
and pertinent documents. All these confirm the outstanding virtues
prevalent in the life of Bishop Gallegos which prompted us to open
the cause, namely: his humility, his ever joyful and positive outlook,
his gentleness, his love and concern for everyone, especially for
the people who were considered “misfits” and troubled,
the migrants and the low riders, the problem of his deteriorating
eyesight which he took in stride without calling attention to himself,
his pastoral zeal in reaching out to everyone without exception
and his being a man of prayer, with special devotion to the Virgin
of Guadalupe. Furthermore, there are signs of the spread of his
fame of sanctity by the presence of people who visit his tomb and
ask for his intercession.
The documents will now be brought to
Rome to be presented to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints
for them to study whether Bishop Gallegos indeed lived a holy life
and practiced virtues in a heroic manner.
