10-09 A Day of Many Celebrations - August 28 in Suffern, New York was rainy and gloomy, and things got steadily worse as the day progressed. The wet weather, however, was not enough to dampen the spirits at Tagaste Monastery as the friars prepared for the annual celebration of the Feast of St. Augustine. Actually, it was a day of many celebrations, since the Augustinian Recollects were remembering not only the feast day of their founder and spiritual father, but were also marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the St. Pius X Guild and the 50th anniversary of the profession of vows of Br. Joseph Joly. Some 200 people, including visiting clergy, Secular Augustinian Recollects from Tagaste, St. Cloud Monastery, and St. John Parish, Guild members, and the principal groups and individuals who support Tagaste as well as the family of Br. Joe, attended the 5:00 PM concelebrated Mass presided by our new Prior Provincial, Fr. Joseph Gallardo. Principal concelebrants included Frs. Charles Huse, former provincial and homilist for the occasion; Ramón Gaitán, prior; John Gruben, vice prior; and Msgr. Joseph Giandurco, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Suffern. Br. Anthony Torretti served as master of ceremonies, and the Tagaste students were acolytes for the occasion. More on this story...
10-09 Br. Joseph Joly, OAR, celebrates 50 years as an Augustinian Recollect - He was in the navy back in 1952, but he also was reading the Summa Theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas, a sure sign that Joseph Joly wasn’t destined to be a sailor forever. While on shore leave in New York City, he decided to ask the first priest he saw for Guideposts (an inspirational magazine). The priest turned out to be Fr. Robert Krajicek, OAR, who not only promised to get him Guideposts, but started a correspondence that would eventually lead to Br. Joe’s admission to the Augustinian Recollects. More on this story...

21st Provincial Chapter, Saint Augustine Province Day 6 – Remembering the Deceased of the Province Today’s chapter meetings began with the Office of Readings for the dead as we remembered our deceased brothers of the Order. The Eucharist was celebrated by the Fr. Gerard Cosgayon who inspired us all with anecdotes from his memoirs of our deceased friars. His homily was really touching as he made us think of those friars who have shared with us this journey of following in the footsteps of St. Augustine. We remembered them in prayer as Holy Mother Church suggests praying for the dead, that although they might have lived a good lives and in friendship with God, they still might need the comfort of our prayers. 5-09 Adult Religious Education at Cristo Rey Shortly after arriving at Cristo Rey Church in Los Angeles, Fr. Michael Stechmann was meeting with parents wishing to have their children baptized and they spoke with honesty about having “fallen through the cracks” through the years regarding reception of the Sacraments. Some of the parishioners who attend daily Mass were concerned about their adult children who were negligent in receiving the Sacraments. Fr. Michael noticed those who were attending Mass and not receiving the Eucharist and began to speak privately to individuals and they were quite eager to tell their stories and even more excited about the possibility of receiving the Sacraments of Initiation. They were ready and willing for the invitation to advance in their faith. More on this story.
2-09 San Miguel, Follow-up As the last Augustinian Recollect parochial vicar at San Miguel Church in Watts (Los Angeles), it was a pleasure to read in the Oct.31, 2008 issue of the Tidings, Hermine Lees' thumbnail history of that parish. I had always heard that it was in gratitude for the financial help of the parishioners of St. Michael’s Parish in Los Angeles that the new parish chose the name San Miguel. The article was unable to give a list of the pastors in San Miguel's early days. More on this story...
2-09 2-09 San Miguel Church: A history (originally appeared in Los Angeles’ Archdiocesan Catholic publication, The Tidings, October 31, 2008) Founded: 1927 Location: 2214 East 108th Street, Los Angeles San Pedro Region: Deanery 17. The poignant cry of "Viva Cristo Rey!" echoed around the world in November of 1927 when the young Jesuit priest, Miguel Pro, was executed in Mexico during the violent persecutions of Catholics in that country. The photograph of his execution --his arms raised in the form of a cross, one hand holding a crucifix, the other a rosary --was intended to show the power of the Marxist regime but instead elicited outrage and protest worldwide. Pope John Paul II beatified the Jesuit in 1988. More on this story...

12-08 - NEW CRUCIFIX IN EUCHARISTIC CHAPEL, ST. BENEDICT’S, MONTEBELLO, CALIFORNIA, SEPTEMBER 14, 2008 When St. Benedict’s jewel-like Eucharistic Chapel was blessed and opened in 2007 on the Feast of Christ the King, it lacked several liturgical pieces that were envisioned in its original plan. 12-08 A BELL RETURNS TO CRISTO REY, 12-08 - The Solemnity of Christ the King on November 23, 2008 was especially significant for our friars and community at Cristo Rey Church in Los Angeles. This marked the patronal feast of the parish which has been under the care of our religious since 1940 when Fr. Jesus Domench began celebrating Mass for the residents of Atwater Village in a rented home. The present church structure was built in 1943 under the watchful eye of Fr. Domench and the generosity of faithful parishioners who asked that their new church be named “Cristo Rey”, a title so important to their faith and culture. It has been a tradition here for many years that various parish groups and families present floral tributes each evening of the novena preceding the patronal feast. More

12-08 2008 Province Assembly, Oxnard, California, October 13-17 - More than three years have passed since our preceding assembly, and this year’s get-together was another memorable one. There were 33 friars of St. Augustine Province in attendance. As usual, the accommodations provided by St. Augustine Priory’s Father Prior Domingos Machado and fellow religious were terrific. The food was fantastic. Yet again, our cherished friends, the Friedrich family, provided several of the meals, beautifully catered and served, complete with brightly-colored autumn table linens and fresh flower baskets. 12-08 Priestly Ordination of Friar Juan José Guzmán, OAR, October 16, 2008 - I can remember so well the night that Juan José first arrived at Tagaste Monastery in Suffern, New York. It was August 2001. Fr. Fredric Abiera and I drove to Newark airport to pick him up. He had just completed his year-long novitiate in Monteagudo, Spain. He was exhausted and not hungry. But, since he didn’t want to disappoint the ravenous Fredric and myself, he went along with our suggestion that we stop for a bite to eat. More

10-08 Fr. Michael Kenny, OAR (1974-2008) - Monday, September 15 was the day I was scheduled to return from California to New York. I had spent several weeks, following my vacation, helping at Mary Star of the Sea Parish in Oxnard during the absence of Fr. Michael Kenny, who was visiting his family in New York. During that final week of my stay at Mary Star, people kept asking me when Fr. Michael would be returning to the parish. He was, as a matter of fact, I told them, due to return on September 19. On the day of my departure I celebrated the 8:00 AM Mass in the parish before leaving for the airport. By coincidence the intention for the day—the Feast of the Sorrowful Mother—was for Fr. Michael Kenny. More

São Paulo, Brazil was our first destination. The whole community
at Las Rozas in Madrid was present on June 24 to say goodbye to us,
the five friars—Fr. Javier Jiménez, our prefect, together
with Fras. Antonio Flores, Jesús Olvera, Luis Cadena and me—who
were leaving for a two-month mission in Brazil. We took off from
Barajas Airport around 1:30 PM, and by 2:45 PM we were already having
lunch as we flew out over the Atlantic Ocean on our way to Brazil
(an 11 hour flight). Leaving Spain, Gibraltar, and Morocco behind,
we took the sea way of “Via Esperanza” and arrived in
São Paulo at 12:35 AM (local time). We waited almost five
hours there for our connecting flight, which took off at 4:50 AM.
and arrived in Manaus around 9 AM. Brother Miguel Pérez was
already there at Eduardo Gomes Airport waiting patiently so that
he could take us to the Recollect community house. More

7-08 Priestly Ordination of
Fr. Michael Stechmann, OAR - During my first year at St.
John’s Seminary in Camarillo, I overheard frequent discussions about “late”, “delayed”, “mature” vocations and this would make me laugh inside, especially since I was almost the oldest student there. It wasn’t until word got out about my age and years in religious life that faculty members and students wanted to hear of my life experiences. (This had its disadvantages, especially when professors in liturgy classes would ask me to explain pre-Vatican II prayers or rituals. It finally got to the point that whenever a professor in any class would mention the general views of anything prior to the Second Vatican Council the whole class would automatically look to me for a response. That was great because I was able to offer personal insights that textbooks might not convey.) I really began to feel like a “mature vocation” during
a course in liturgical music when I was the only one in the class
that had access to a tape recorder! More

of the Union City chapter (St. Nicholas Delegation)

wake of the mandate of the last General Chapter
that 2008 be a special Year of Vocations, and

Ed Fagan, OAR, who, when he was a student, said that if he became a priest he would hold a dinner on Thanksgiving for people in the local community who normally spend the whole year alone. Well, that wish did become a reality. This year a dinner with all the trimmings was served to over 60 guests. There
were also a number of dinners delivered to those who were homebound
and unable to join us at the Godwin Terrace School. More

11-07 The Day of My Religious Consecration to God - The day I consecrated myself publicly to God will always be a blessed and special moment for me--a very personal, intimate, and unique experience. Admittedly there have been moments when I have not felt worthy enough to make this commitment. Moreover, the profession liturgy seemed to be so short but simultaneously so valuable for my future life. For sure it will be a lifetime remembrance. Reflecting deeply on my profession of simple vows of chastity, obedience and poverty, I would have to say that it would not have been so blessed and would not have marked my life so profoundly, if it wasn’t for the spiritual preparation I received during my year of novitiate.

10-07 Fr. James McGuire celebrates 60 years as an Augustinian Recollect - Anniversaries and jubilees
are milestones. They do not represent a goal or a
finish. An anniversary is a time to pause, a moment
for a backward glance to see what has been accomplished,
to be humbly grateful and then strike on toward another
milestone. So Father McGuire reminded the many who
gathered with him on September 9, 2007, in Montebello's
St. Benedict Church to mark the 60th anniversary of
his religious profession. More

10-07 Memories of
my Solemn Profession - The day of my solemn profession
came at last on August 25th 2007. This event was so
significant in my life because I was first and foremost
making a decisive choice, a lifetime commitment. Before
making my solemn profession I began to think about
how it all started: in other words, what events and
experiences brought me to this point? The first thought
that came to my mind was the time when I was just
starting my initial formation. I remembered Oxnard,
California where the house of initial formation is
located and the weekend vocation retreats are held.
In 1995 I first met Fr. JosÈ Luis Mart’nez who was
vocation promoter at that time. More

Thanksgiving Day Reflection Last Thanksgiving Day, I
remember how I carved, for the first time, a pumpkin and displayed it
at the window of St. John’s Rectory in the Bronx with a little
candle burning dimly inside it. Last Thanksgiving Day, I remember joining
the Parish staff and volunteers serving the Thanksgiving Dinner at St.
John’s School for the elderly and for those who were alone during
the Holiday Celebration. Last Thanksgiving Day, I remember feasting
on those delicious turkey and everything that goes with the abundant
and bountiful Thanksgiving dinner. Well, I remember them, not only because
they were good memories to reminisce, but also because in my current
situation, I cannot help but recall those experiences that will clearly
be absent this year. And in a way, going through “memory lane”
gives me the chance to re-live those experiences, which trigger my nostalgic
longing for something I would not be celebrating this year- something
I knew when I accepted my assignment to study here in Rome. More

10-06 St. Benedict Parish in Montebello California, celebrates its 100th Jubilee One year ago, on September 30, 2005, the St. Benedict Parish family issued a proclamation which, after situating the event in the third Christian millennium, and the history of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, declared open its Jubilee Year, marking the one hundredth anniversary of its establishment. The year was filled with special prayers, parish suppers, concerts by the local choir, bulletin notices, and marathon committee meetings. A distinctive logo was created for the occasion by Fr. Rafael Nieto, OAR, in San Millan, Spain. In addition, various souvenir items were prepared and sold, attractive invitations printed and mailed, and a handsome commemorative journal written and published. More on this story....

For a month prior to his death and shortly after arriving at his new assignment at St. John Parish in the Bronx, New York, Fr. Frank had been hospitalized with a mysterious illness which his doctors at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center referred to as a form of encephalitis, but which seemed to elude definitive diagnosis or treatment. After taking sick he remained to the end almost totally unresponsive and unaware of people and things around him, an unfortunate ending for a man who had always enjoyed an intense level of interaction with others. Normally, when the phone rings at that hour it’s either a wrong number or bad news. Unfortunately, it was very bad news, indeed. The friars at Mary Star of the Sea Parish in Oxnard, California, were calling to inform me that Fr. Etelvino Iglesias, assistant pastor, had died earlier that evening in his room at the parish rectory. It would later be verified that he had died of a severe heart attack. As we move from 2005 to 2006, we realize more than any other day of the year, perhaps except during our birthdays, that time indeed flies. Yesterday, last month, last year shall never come again, and the best we can do for has been is to leave them in the mercy of God. As we begin another year, certainly we are made aware of the passing of the limited world, as well as of our encounter with the God of Eternal existence and the promise of eternal life in heaven. more on this story

short article for our community website which I planned to entitle:

large Catholic community of some 60, 000 people whose language is predominately

in the readings and commentaries of the Mass of Ordination. Quiche runs
through the mountainous central region of Guatemala, a predominantly
agricultural area with widely spaced towns. The standard of living would
be considered extremely poor by American standards. Serving this large
area are some 30 priests.
