Our Deceased Brothers

“Christ of St. Augustine” by Georgina Arellano (“Gogy”), an SAR member from our chapter in Mexico City, is an original representation in bronze of the Risen Christ.

“With a Spirit of piety, we must keep alive among us the memory of our dead brothers by
offering prayers of expiation for them.”
--Constitutions, 93

Prayer Service for our Deceased Brothers
--Ritual, 180-82.

*This service can be celebrated in conjunction with one of the Hours (Liturgy of the Hours),
incorporated into meditation, or done at some other convenient time.

The service may open with an appropriate hymn.

Leader: Brothers, we gather together to show our fraternal communion with Fr./Br. N., who has passed from this world. Strengthened by the hope that those who have died in the Lord, live in the Risen Christ, let us commend our brother to the love of the Father.

Leader: O God, forever inclined to mercy and pardon, listen to our petitions for your servant N., who has come into your presence, and because he believed and hoped in you, lead him to that eternal home where he can enjoy eternal peace with You. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Reading of the Death Notice and/or a short Scripture reading may take place now. This may be followed by a short meditation or reflection.

Prayers of the Faithful

Leader: Brothers, strengthened in faith by the Word of God, let us pray to the Lord, the Father of mercy that those who have been joined to the death of His Son might share in His resurrection.

For our brother N., a child of God through baptism and heir to eternal life, that the Lord deign to join him to the assembly of the elect, let us pray to the Lord. R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For our brother N., who was nourished with the body and blood of Christ, the seed of eternal life, that he be admitted to the eternal banquet, let us pray to the Lord. R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For our brother N., who consecrated his life to seeking God in the common life as a son of Augustine, that Christ and the Virgin Mary join him to the communion of saints, let us pray to the Lord. R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For N.’s family and friends and for all of us, that we experience consolation in the Word of God and in his promises, let us pray to the Lord. R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For all of our deceased religious, family members, and benefactors, that the bond of love which joined us together here on earth will reach completion in heaven, we pray to the Lord. R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For all those who have died in the hope of the Resurrection, that the Risen Christ welcomes them into eternal glory, we pray to the Lord. R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For all of us gathered here in the communion of faith and hope, that after our pilgrimage here on earth, we will be reunited with one another and with our brothers (and sisters) in heaven, let us pray to the Lord. R. Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: Let us conclude our prayer with the words of the Lord which are the requests of sons and the prayers of brothers: Our Father.

Let us pray.

Our Father who, always attentive to the requests of your faithful ones, listen to the desires of our hearts; grant that our brother N. may participate with your saints and chosen ones in eternal life. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The service may conclude with an appropriate hymn.
