On Monday, February 8th, 2010 the Sacramento Bee newspaper ran a story stating, “Nearly 19 years after his death, the body of Bishop Alphonse Gallegos will be exhumed from St. Mary’s cemetery next month and moved to a downtown church as part of his journey to sainthood.”
The body of the Servant of God, Bishop Alphonse Gallegos, will be moved from the cemetery to Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, 711 T Street, Sacramento, California, Saturday, March 27th, with a special Mass, at 12 noon, that is open to the public. The diocese of Sacramento has begun constructing a tomb for Bishop Gallegos in this downtown church. This will allow the faithful easy access to his body asking his intercession.
On January 31, 2010, there was a fundraiser to raise money for the new tomb of Bishop Gallegos. It was held in Camarillo, California, in the residence of Salvador and Soledad Plascencia, who came up with the idea and hosted this event. About two hundred people attended, to enjoy authentic Mexican food and contribute to the construction of the tomb of Bishop Gallegos. Members of Bishop Gallegos’ family were present for this fundraiser. The atmosphere was one of joy and celebration.
